Dodger Fan Stabbing Suspect Released From Jail, District Attorney Needs More Evidence

The man accused in the stabbing death of Dodger fan Jonathan Denver last week was released from custody tonight, according to Sheriff's officials.

Police arrested Michael Montgomery, 21, of Lodi, in the killing of 24-year-old Los Angeles Dodger fan Jonathan Denver who was fatally stabbed after the team's loss to the San Francisco Giants. Montgomery was arrested September 26, a day after the homicide, which San Francisco police said was sparked by a rivalry-fueled fight that broke out near AT&T Park the night before.

The confrontation began four blocks away from AT&T park, when Denver's group bumped into the suspects' group and rival comments were exchanged. The two groups parted after the initial exchange, but after a second fight Denver realized he has been stabbed. Montgomery's family maintains that the stabbing was in self-defense, after he was hit with a chair.

Montgomery's release came after District Attorney George Gascon said he wasn't ready to file criminal charges in the case for lack of evidence. Gascon said prosecutors need to be certain they can prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt before proceedings. "It is the People's burden to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not act in lawful self-defense," Gascon said.

Authorities are asking the public to come forward if they have any eyewitness accounts as to the incident, or if they have videotape.

Miss Teen USA Extortion Suspect, Former Classmate Jared Abrahams, Arrested

Jares James Abrahams, a 19-year-old Temecula college freshman, was taken into custody Thursday on federal charges he attempted to extort the newly crowned Miss Teen USA and other young women.

Jared James Abrahams allegedly commandeered webcams of unsuspecting women in Canada, Ireland, Russia and across the United States, a federal criminal complaint unsealed Thursday said. It is alleged that Abrahams around the world by hijacking their computer's webcams to capture naked images
The complaint states that once Abrahams had obtained the nude photos, it is alleged that he used those photos to blackmail the subjects to provide more images. Abrahams allegedly threatened to transform reigning Miss Teen USA Cassidy Wolf 's "dream of being a model ... into a porn star" if the victim did not comply with his demands, according to a court record.
The FBI investigation was sparked after Wolf alerted authorities in March to a change in her Facebook password and an alleged sextortion demand from a person authorities said they later identified as Abraham.
Abrahams allegedly changed Miss Teen USA's Twitter account photo to a half-naked image of her and then sent Miss Teen USA two images of her naked that were taken inside her home by her webcam months earlier, according to the criminal complaint.
Miss Teen USA, Cassidy Wolf, is not the only alleged victim in this matter. The complaint identifies at least seven victims identified by initials only and said that once confronted, Abrahams admitted his crimes in an interview with an FBI special agent.
FBI agents raided Abrahams Temecula home in June, seizing computers and hardware, cellphones and hacking software. The criminal complaint states the FBI also found evidence that he had commandeered 30 to 40 computers and gathered images of victims from Southern California and other parts of the world.
Abrahams was being held on $50,000 bail Thursday. A judge ordered that Abrahams, if freed, must wear a GPS tracker and would be prohibited from using a computer for anything other than academic work.

Norwalk Pastor Arrested Sexual Assault

An associate pastor and counselor of the Nuevas Buenas Church in Norwalk is accused of sexually assaulted at least 20 parishioners at his Norwalk church over an eight year period.

Detectives alleged that Jorge Juan Castro, 54, targeted female parishioners who were undocumented immigrants and spoke only Spanish, assaulting them at the church or during home visits. Castro allegedly told the women he had “healing hands” and threatening to call immigration officials if they reported him, authorities said. He was arrested and charged last week on suspicion of rape and related counts.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials claim the incidents date back his arrival in Los Angeles from Argentina in 2004. Detectives received information in April that Castro had allegedly sexually assaulted women from the church from October 2004 to September 2012.

The investigation began when the alleged victims implicated the suspect to a third party, and that person contacted sheriff’s deputies. Some victims provided evidence to detectives and their allegations led to charges being filed, Sgt. Al Garcia said. Only four of the alleged victims have come forward, Garcia said. The rest fear deportation.

Church leaders removed Castro from the church upon learning of the case and detectives went to the mostly Spanish-speaking congregation in hopes of gathering more information.

After surveillance by undercover major-crimes detectives, Castro, a 53-year-old Norwalk resident, was arrested on September 13, and booked on an arrest warrant for six felony charges of rape, oral copulation, and penetration by a foreign object. He remains in custody, with bail set at $2 million. The number of charges is expected to rise as authorities look for more potential victims.

Mother Arrested for Double Homicide in Santa Ana

A mother from Scottsdale, Arizona, is facing charges of murder with special circumstances after she allegedly murdered her two children in a Costa Mesa hotel room, and then attempted suicide.

Marilyn Edge, 42, of Scottsdale, Ariz., has been in jail on suicide watch since her arrest Saturday.

Edge tipped off police shortly after they say she attempted to commit suicide in Costa Mesa by crashing her gray Honda Accord into protective poles surrounding an electric vault behind a Home Depot in the on Harbor Boulevard.

When officers responded, Edge wouldn't unlock her doors or exit the car, according to a press release from the Costa Mesa Police Department. When she began strangling herself with an electrical cord, officers smashed a window of the 2006 Honda Accord and pulled her out, police said.

While she was with paramedics, Edge made comments indicating that a crime might have occurred in Santa Ana, just six miles away from where she attempted to commit suicide. Upon investigation, Edge's children's bodies were found inside a third-floor room at the Hampton Inn & Suites near the 55 Freeway and Dyer Road around 9 a.m. The children's cause of death has not been released. Edge allegedly kidnapped her two children after her ex-husband was awarded sole custody.

Edge is now facing two counts of murder for the killing of her 10-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son. She is to be arraigned Tuesday, September 17, in Santa Ana.
