Former Fullerton Mayor and Assemblyman Chris Norby Arrested

Former Assemblyman Chris Norby is out on bail Thursday after being arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and child endangerment, Fullerton police said. This is just the latest in a series of domestic issues dating back to his days as an Orange County supervisor.

Fullerton police were summoned to Norby’s home Wednesday afternoon. Norby, 64, was taken into custody the same day and booked at the Fullerton Police Department Jail. He was released a few hours later after posting a $10,000 bond, police said.

Though authorities have refused to release more information about the case, Norby said Thursday that he believes his wife, Martha Norby, allegedly went to Fullerton police with accusations that he abused her. Martha Norby is Norby's fourth wife.

The Republican served as councilman and mayor in Fullerton before joining the Orange County Board of Supervisors. He was elected to the 65th Assembly District seat in a 2010 special election, but he lost his Assembly reelection bid in 2012 to Sharon Quirk-Silva, a Democrat.

This incident is not Norby’s first run in with the law.  Norby was investigated in 2010 after a deliveryman called police to say he overheard an argument between Norby and his wife. Criminal charges were not filed in that case due to insufficient evidence. In 2012 the state Fair Political Practices Commission dismissed allegations that Norby had misused campaign money to pay for a motel stay in 2007, when he was experiencing marital troubles during his third marriage. The state's ethics watchdog agency found that the $340 charge was properly paid for because it served a governmental purpose by helping Norby study how the homeless and transient population relies on motels.

The current case against Norby will be forwarded to the district attorney's office, which will decide whether to file charges. His arraignment is scheduled for March 19.

No other details on the arrest were immediately released.
