Roommate "KC" Joy Found Guilty in Maribel Ramos Murder

After being charged with murder in May of 2013, Maribel Ramos roommate, Kwang Choi “KC” Joy, was recently found guilty and sentenced.

Joy, 55, was convicted in July on one felony count of second-degree murder
in the killing of Ramos, 36, a U.S. Army veteran who served two combat tours in Iraq and was student at California State University-Fullerton. Joy murdered Ramos sometime between May 2 and May 3, 2013, and disposed of her body in the canyon, the Orange County District Attorney's Office said.

According to authorities, Joy and Ramos argued on May 2, 2013, about rent. Friends reported her missing the next night when she missed scheduled events.

Authorities put Joy under surveillance after Ramos’s disappearance. Their big break came when Joy’s internet searches at an Orange County Public Library on how long a body took to decompose, and how close a search party was to where he buried Ramos’ body, led police to the area in which Ramos’ body was discovered.

During the search for Ramos, Joy gave several media interviews expressing his concern for Ramos, and claiming he had no idea what happened to her. Ramos's cause of death was never determined due to the state of decomposition of her body. Joy was arrested on May 17.

During the trial, prosecutors alleged that Joy was in love with Ramos, who did not feel the same way about him. Joy insisted upon his innocence throughout the trial.

Joy was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison for the murder of roommate Maribel Ramos.
