Rowland Heights Doctor Convicted of Murder

Hsiu-Ying (“Lisa”) Tseng, a medical doctor from Rowland Heights, was convicted this past week of second-degree murder for the death of three of her patients. Tseng is scheduled to be sentenced on December 14.

In what has been reported as the first case of its kind in California, Tseng was charged with and convicted of murder for patients under her care. All three of the victims were under 30 years old.

The prosecution argued that Tseng recklessly prescribed unreasonably high levels of opiates to these three patients, even after learning that some of them had previously overdosed on those same prescriptions.

The prosecution also contended that Tseng intentionally covered up her wrongdoing by altering or omitting medical information in the patients’ files and charts.

On the other hand, the defense argued that while Tseng could have been a better doctor, she was by no means guilty of murder. Tseng, the defense asserted, was simply too trusting of her patients and their self-reporting about their medical needs.

Beyond the three counts of second-degree murder, Tseng was also convicted of 19 counts of unlawful prescription of a controlled substance and one count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.

For these convictions, Tseng could be sentenced to life in prison.

Suspect Charged in LAPD Shooting

As a result of an altercation with Los Angeles police officers earlier this week, Oscar Ovidio Diaz has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer and one count of stealing a motor vehicle.

Diaz, 30, was shot and critically wounded by the LAPD during a struggle with the officers. The Los Angeles County DA’s office said that Diaz assaulted the officers by cutting them with a knife after the officers stopped a car Mr. Diaz allegedly stole.

The incident occurred on Tuesday near the USC campus. Diaz was hospitalized for his injuries, resulting in the postponement of his arraignment.

Prosecutors have stated that Diaz has prior criminal convictions.

The LAPD’s investigation of the incident is ongoing and will be reviewed by additional law enforcement authorities because it involves a police shooting.

If Mr. Diaz is convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison.

UCLA Football Player Arrested and Accused of Rape

This past Thursday, a UCLA football player was arrested on three counts of rape related to an alleged incident that took place nearly one year ago.

After conducting what the LAPD characterized as a thorough investigation, police arrested and booked Adam Searl, 20-years-old, on October 8. Mr. Searl was released that same day after making $300,000 bail.

Mr. Searl is accused of sexually assaulting a female UCLA student at an off-campus party in Westwood. The female student later identified Mr. Searl as the perpetrator for police as part of their investigation.

Mr. Searl was the punter for the UCLA Bruins football team this season.

Following the arrest, UCLA football coach Jim Mora released a statement indicating Mr. Searl was suspended indefinitely from the team. “We have been informed of the situation involving Adam Searl, and we take these accusations very seriously,” Mora said.

Mr. Searl’s first court appearance is scheduled for October 29.

Chatsworth Woman Charged in Infant's Death

After a preliminary hearing, a Superior Court judge in Los Angeles ruled on Friday that there was enough evidence against Monica Rezonable to support criminal charges related to accusations of shaken baby syndrome.

The charges stem from an incident in 2013 when Calin Samora was found limp, gasping for air, and displayed other symptoms consist with abusive head trauma while in Ms. Rezonable’s care. Calin suffered permanent physical and mental harm, and is partially blind.

The government has charged Ms. Rezonable with felony child abuse and assault likely to inflict great bodily harm. Prosecutors accuse Ms. Rezonable of assaulting a 3-month-old infant in her care.

The preliminary hearing lasted over three days and each side presented evidence so that Judge Christine Erwell could decide whether the case should proceed.

The defense contends that the injuries suffered by the infant were the result of an accident: Ms. Rezonable slipped and fell while holding the child in her arms. To support its theory, the defense presented an expert witness who testified the child’s injuries were inconsistent with shaken baby syndrome.

After considering all of the evidence, the judge decided that there was sufficient evidence to establish probable cause for the charges against Ms. Rezonable.

Ms. Rezonable is currently scheduled to return to court on October 26 to be arraigned.

Ms. Rezonable, 34, is from Chatsworth.
