Suspect in Venice Boardwalk Crash Charged with Murder, Pleads Not Guilty

On August 3, 2013, in Venice Beach, a motorist drove a car through vehicle barriers to get onto the pedestrian-heavy boardwalk, killing one pedestrian and injuring 16 others, before driving away.
The lone pedestrian killed in the hit-and-run crash was identified as Alice Gruppioni, 32, from Italy, was on her honeymoon when the car plowed into a crowd on the Venice boardwalk. Gruppioni was killed and her husband suffered injuries.
Later that evening, a man surrendered to police at a Santa Monica police station. He was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder. The suspected driver was identified that day as 38-year-old Nathan Louis Campbell.
Campbell, who allegedly plowed his car onto the popular Venice Beach boardwalk failed a field sobriety test when he surrendered to authorities to hours after the crash, according to Los Angeles Police Department

A felony complaint outlined 34 counts against Campbell, saying he acted willfully. However, it provided no explanation for why he allegedly maneuvered around a vehicle barrier and plowed into tourists and vendors on the boardwalk.
Campbell made his first court appearance at the Los Angeles Airport Courthouse on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, pleading not guilty to murder, along with 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 17 counts of hit-and-run.

If convicted, Campbell could face life in prison. His bail was set at $1.48 million dollars.

A criminal conviction is costly. You may serve time in prison, you may have your license revoked, your career and family life will be disrupted, and your record will be stained by such convictions.
